When we bought this old farmhouse about 20 years ago, it was as it had been lived in – a single ‘living room’ with open fireplace for warmth and cooking, table and bed. The remaining space was given over to a granary above the living room (the only wooden floored area), a barn area storing animal feed next to the living room and milking parlour at the far end of the house. Above these two areas was hayloft. The roof, having lost its thatch soon after the war, was covered in corrugated zinc coated steel sheets and remains so to this day. We have sought to re-create an old style simple Normandy farmhouse feel in what is still the living room, adding a traditional Normandy wardrobe to contain crockery and other tableware as was customary.
The former agricultural parts of the house have now been converted to kitchen, bedrooms, and bathroom and although we have introduced modern elements such as microwave oven, ceramic hob, washing machine and instant shower for example, we have avoided having a telephone or TV.
The house is set in 7 acres of pasture land and is relatively isolated, whilst being close to a road which gets you to a small town in 5 minutes by car. It is just over an hour’s drive from the port of Caen Ouistreham.
The Entrance
It is a true country retreat, where you can enjoy the peace and tranquillity of the countryside and fill your evenings with eating, drinking and playing games together with family and friends.
The photo gallery will give you a flavour of the place both inside and out.
The Farmhouse
If you fancy a stay here, the cost for 2010-2011 is between €300 and €400 per week, depending on season and comes with a free cider allowance for your enjoyment. It is available most of the year to fit around our own time there.
It needs to be said that it is our second home and not just a holiday let and as such is a very personal place which we are very happy for you to use and enjoy. If you are interested, give us a call and we can give you far more detail than space allows for here.
