Willingham Horticultural Show 2011
The Show committee members are very grateful for the support shown for the 2011 Horticultural show held on 24th September. Despite the number of entries being down in a number of categories, the hall looked and smelt splendid with a great array of fruit and vegetables, preserves, art and craft. As usual, Brownies, Cubs, Beavers and school pupils made an excellent and colourful contribution to the show and the committee would like to thank all the adults who encouraged them to enter.
Margaret Smith, the Society Present, welcomed all the visitors and thanked the exhibitors and the committee for their hard work. She paid tribute to the contribution of Mrs Joan Longworth, our Treasurer, who had sadly died during the year and was greatly missed. She also spoke of the deaths of Colin and Janet Hutchinson of Upton. Colin had been a marvellous supporter of the show, and winner of many trophies. A beautiful new cup, the Drury Cup, had been given to the show by Kevin Drury in memory of his parents Mr and Mrs M Drury, who had been exhibitors on many occasions in past years. This cup was presented for the first time for the adult Handicraft section Margaret then introduced Mr Ralph Bates to present the prizes.
Ralph commented that he had seen many changes to the Show over the 50 years that he had been living in the village. Many years ago there had been sheaves of wheat and mangold-wurzels on show. Now there were handicrafts and photographs. Despite these changes, he said, the support of the community was what was important. He hoped that the show would still be well attended in another 50 years time. He went on to challenge villagers to take an unposed photograph of him at some point during the next year. The prize would be a fish and chip supper at the Half Moon. More details about how to enter this competition will come later.
The aggregate cup winner for the adults was Trevor Fray, with Helgi Gudmundsson and Sue Faull as runners up. The aggregate cup winner for the children was Tom Summers with Maisie Blanchette as runner up. Proceedings finished with a large raffle and an auction of produce. Matthew Bates was an excellent auctioneer, just exceeding his grandfather’s highest total takings by 50p. This money goes towards prizes for next year’s show
